Key takeaways
- To check ChatGPT brand mentions, ask category buyer questions, not your brand name, in a logged-out or unpersonalized session with web search on.
- Run each question 3 to 5 times and count a mention rate, because answers change from run to run.
- The sources ChatGPT cites are your action list: on our 5 October 2026 scan, one Zapier list page was behind 19 of the answers Howseen lost.
- Track the same questions over time across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode to see the trend, not a snapshot.
To check if ChatGPT mentions your brand, ask the questions your buyers ask in a fresh chat with web search on, run each one several times and note which brands get named, or run a free checker that does it for you.
Updated October 2026. Typing your own brand name into ChatGPT proves almost nothing: the model will usually describe you if you ask about you. The real question is whether ChatGPT names you when a buyer asks for a recommendation in your category and has never heard of you. That is the answer that decides who makes the shortlist.
It matters because buyers increasingly stop at the AI answer. In a Pew Research Center analysis of 68,879 Google searches by 900 U.S. adults, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. If the answer names a competitor and not you, many buyers never reach your site. Here is how to check, step by step, and what to do with what you find.
Is there a free tool to see if ChatGPT mentions your brand?
Yes. Howseen's free AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT three buying questions about your category, with web search on, and shows whether you are named, who is named instead, and which pages it read.
It needs no signup: type your brand and what you sell. Use it as a first snapshot, then run the manual method below to test more questions, or track them over time across engines.
How do I check brand mentions in ChatGPT manually?
You see brand mentions in ChatGPT by running your category buyer questions in a clean session, several times each, and logging who is named, where, and from which sources.
- Step 1: List 10 to 20 buyer questions. Category and use case questions, not your brand name. Think of what a prospect types before choosing a vendor.
- Step 2: Open a clean session. A logged-out browser window, or a Temporary Chat with personalization off, so your own history does not tilt the answer.
- Step 3: Turn on web search. ChatGPT then pulls live pages and shows its sources, which is closer to what a buyer researching a purchase sees.
- Step 4: Run each question 3 to 5 times. One run is a sample, not a result. Count how often you appear across runs.
- Step 5: Log four fields per answer. Named or not, position in the list, accuracy of the description, and the sources cited.
- Step 6: Write down who appears in your place. Those names are your real competitive set in the eyes of the model.
A spreadsheet with one row per question and one column per run is enough for a first pass. It takes an afternoon for 20 questions on one engine.
Which prompts should I type to check if my brand appears in ChatGPT?
Type the prompts a buyer would type: category recommendations, use cases, alternatives and comparisons. Each prompt type tests a different moment of the buying journey.
| Prompt type | Example to type | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Category recommendation | "What tools help [job] for a [company type]?" | Whether you exist for cold buyers who do not know you |
| Use case | "How do I [problem you solve] without hiring?" | Whether ChatGPT links your product to the problem |
| Alternative | "What are alternatives to [market leader]?" | Whether you are in the consideration set next to the leader |
| Comparison | "[Your brand] vs [competitor]: which fits a 10-person team?" | How ChatGPT describes your strengths and weaknesses |
| Direct brand | "What is [your brand] and who is it for?" | Accuracy of your description, not visibility |
Add one follow-up after each answer: "Which sources did you use for this answer?" It surfaces the pages behind the recommendation, which become your target list later.
Should I check ChatGPT logged in or logged out?
Check logged out or in a non-personalized Temporary Chat first. Your own account remembers you, so a logged-in test can show your brand more often than a stranger would see it.
OpenAI explains in its Memory FAQ that with "Reference chat history" on, ChatGPT can use relevant information from past conversations to personalize future responses. If you have spent weeks talking to ChatGPT about your own product, it may bring your brand up for you and for nobody else. A Temporary Chat does not create or update memories, and the unpersonalized option does not use them either. Use logged-in results only as a second data point, never as your baseline.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time?
ChatGPT answers vary because each run can search differently, read different pages and phrase the shortlist differently. That is why a single check misleads and repeated sampling is required.
Google describes the same mechanism for its own AI features in its documentation on AI features in Search:
"Both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a 'query fan-out' technique ... issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources ... to develop a response." (Google Search Central)
The pool of pages the engines draw from is wide. In our study of AI answers to buyer questions, five engines cited 41,711 source links from 5,724 distinct domains. A brand can appear in run one and vanish in run two simply because a different page was read. Count your mentions as a rate (named in 3 of 5 runs), not as a yes or no.
How do I see which sources ChatGPT cites?
Turn on web search, then open the citations in the answer or the Sources panel. Those links are the pages that shaped the recommendation and the places where your brand needs to be mentioned.
According to OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search, answers that use the web include inline citations you can open, plus a Sources view listing the references. Note that engines cite at very different depths: in our study, Perplexity cited 17.4 sources per answer on average and ChatGPT 5.2. With so few sources per ChatGPT answer, each cited page carries a lot of weight.
Sort the sources into three groups: your own site, list and review pages written by third parties, and community threads. In most categories, the third party pages dominate, which is the core reason AI recommends your competitors instead of you.
If you want the full picture without the copy and paste, run a free AI visibility report: no card, about 2 minutes, and it shows which engines name you and who they name instead.
What happened when I checked Howseen in ChatGPT and other engines?
I connected Howseen to Claude through the Howseen MCP and asked who AI recommends instead of Howseen AI. The answer was humbling and useful in equal parts.
- Visibility of 4%. On our 5 October 2026 scan of 50 tracked buyer questions, Howseen's AI visibility across the engines was 4%.
- One competitor on 45 of 50 questions. A single competing tool was named on 45 of the 50 tracked buyer questions.
- One page behind 19 lost answers. The page those engines cited most in the answers we lost was a Zapier article listing AI visibility tools (zapier.com/blog/best-ai-visibility-tool/), cited in 19 lost answers.
- Named in 9 of 234 answers. Every one of the 9 came from 2 tracked questions that already contained our name, such as a "Howseen vs" comparison. On the other 48 buyer questions, no engine named us.
My take, from building Howseen: the fix was not another page on our own site. It was getting onto the one third party list page the engines kept reading. The sources tell you exactly where to go.
How do I track brand mentions over time and across AI engines?
Track the same fixed set of buyer questions on a schedule, across every engine your buyers use, and follow the trend of three numbers: mention rate, position and share of voice.
| Engine | Where buyers meet it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Direct research chats, often with web search | Mention rate across runs, sources cited |
| Gemini | Google app and Workspace users | Whether your description is accurate |
| Perplexity | Research heavy users | Many sources per answer, so more chances to be cited |
| Google AI Overviews | Summary at the top of Google results | Which pages are linked next to the summary |
| Google AI Mode | Conversational search inside Google | Fan-out queries that pull different sources |
Once you have runs over several weeks, compute your AI share of voice: your mentions divided by all brand mentions on the same questions. Our guide on how to measure AI share of voice walks through the formula and a realistic target.
How can a B2B SaaS company track if it is mentioned in ChatGPT responses?
A B2B SaaS company should map buyer questions to each buying stage, then track them per engine, per segment and per competitor, because each stage surfaces a different shortlist.
- Problem stage: "How do [role]s reduce [pain] in 2026?"
- Solution stage: "What software helps [role] with [job]?"
- Shortlist stage: "[Leader] alternatives for a [size] company"
- Decision stage: "[You] vs [competitor] pricing and integrations"
Add the qualifiers your buyers actually use: company size, industry, region, integrations, compliance. A tool can be named for "startups" and missing for "enterprise", and that gap is invisible if you only test one generic prompt.
Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my brand?
ChatGPT usually doesn't mention a brand because the few pages it reads for that question don't name it. With about 5 sources per answer, each cited page decides the shortlist.
The engines also read different parts of the web. In our study of 5,331 AI answers, Google AI Overviews cited YouTube in 45.0% of its answers and AI Mode in 27.4%, while ChatGPT did not cite YouTube once in 1,164 answers. A brand that is strong on video can be visible in Google's AI and absent from ChatGPT, so check each engine separately.
What should I do if ChatGPT does not mention my brand?
If ChatGPT does not mention your brand, find the pages it cites for your buyer questions and earn a place on them. Updating your own site helps, but third party mentions move the answer.
- List the pages cited in the answers where you are missing, and rank them by how often they appear.
- Contact the authors of list and comparison pages with a clear, factual reason to include you.
- Answer the buyer question directly on your own site, with a short self-contained answer at the top of each section.
- Keep facts consistent everywhere: name, category, pricing, use cases.
- Re-run the same questions every few weeks and see whether the mention rate moves.
The full method, from on-page structure to third party mentions, is in our GEO playbook for AI search.
How does Howseen track ChatGPT brand mentions?
Howseen runs your buyer questions on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode on a schedule, then shows who is named, where, and from which sources.
You can also ask your AI assistant directly: connect the Howseen MCP to Claude or another assistant and ask "who does AI recommend instead of us, and which pages are behind it?", which is exactly how I found the Zapier page above. To see where your brand stands today, start with the free AI report: no card, about 2 minutes.
Can I just ask ChatGPT if it knows my brand?
You can, but it only tests whether the model recognizes your name. The useful test is whether ChatGPT names you when someone asks for a recommendation in your category without mentioning you.
How can I see brand mentions in ChatGPT for free?
Run 10 to 20 buyer questions in a logged-out window or an unpersonalized Temporary Chat, with web search on, 3 to 5 times each, and log who is named, in what position, and which sources are cited.
Why does ChatGPT mention my brand when I am logged in but not logged out?
Memory and chat history can personalize answers to you. If you often discuss your own product, ChatGPT may bring it up for you specifically. Treat logged-out results as the baseline a new buyer sees.
How often should I check ChatGPT brand mentions?
Every two to four weeks on the same fixed questions. Answers change between runs, so the trend over several checks is what shows whether your work pays off.
Which AI engines should I check besides ChatGPT?
Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Each engine reads different sources, so a brand can be visible in one and absent in another.
How do I get ChatGPT to mention my brand?
Find the pages ChatGPT cites for your buyer questions and get mentioned on them, then answer those questions clearly on your own site. Third party list and review pages carry the most weight.
Is there a free tool to check if ChatGPT mentions my brand?
Yes. Howseen's free AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT three buying questions about your category with web search on, and shows whether you are named, who is named instead and which pages it read. It needs no signup.
